THE ABILITY TO DEFEND YOURSELF IS IMPORTANT, BUT IT SHOULD BE A LAST RESORT IN TERMS OF SELF-DEFENCE!
As instructors we would be wrong to tell you to jump straight in with fists and legs flying all over your aggressor. It is important to be able to fight off an attacker should the need arise, but the best form of self-defence methods are to avoid such situations first and foremost. Assess the threat to you and minimise it by appropriate non-violent responses, stay calm and do not raise your fists immediately, fold your arms so that they are up and ready to move if attacked. Anything that will help you avoid a situation where you have to use your kickboxing skills to defend yourself is important, walk away from confrontation, find a safer enviroment to be in, do not advertise your personnel belongings and educate your friends to these things too; become a teacher yourself.
